This Netflix documentary is inspired by the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social activist from Tamil Nadu, India, who created low-cost sanitary towels/menstrual pads machine with the goal/mission that in India 100% of women can use and have access to this product, as today this only happens for 10%.

The Story

When girls are asked if they know what menstruation is, some laugh. But it is not a laugh of mockery, it is a shy, uncomfortable laugh that does not understand the reason for the question and only seeks to end the subject immediately. Many others say that they do know what it is, but that they refrain from answering because they are embarrassed by the question. However, it is not only girls who have this attitude towards the subject.

The same question is asked to young adults, they, too, laughing, almost in shock at hearing such a question, answer that they understand that menstruation is like a disease that affects only women. When asked, the old women say that menstruation is something that only God knows what it is, but it refers to bad blood.

According to this, the first thing that can be concluded is that there is a lot of misinformation about what menstruation really is. This lack of knowledge about what is a biological process, normal and natural, brings many problems for women and girls who face it every month.

The implications of misinformation on this subject

The most notorious implication: discrimination in every sphere of women's and girls' lives.

Girls' education is disrupted as they have problems attending school and, in many cases, decide to withdraw. As shown in the documentary, the girls mention the difficulties they have in changing the fabric they use to avoid staining. They say that they have to go to faraway places to do this and that, in many cases, the presence of men makes them feel uncomfortable, as they are often left looking at them, which prevents them from being able to change it. This happens when going to a bathroom or a private place is not an option for them at that time.

As far as religion is concerned, women do not visit temples or pray to any god while having their period. First, because the elders have assured them that their prayers are not heard by the gods, and second because society considers women in their period as unclean.

This problem of misinformation about the menstrual period also creates problems for the health of girls and women. Many of them use old fabrics and do not constantly change them, which can result in discomfort and even infection. As this film asserts, girls simply use whatever cloth they can find when they see that they are bleeding.

Time for action

To combat this lack of information and to generate a change in the community about the conception of this misconception of menstruation, a small group of women decided to improve communication by giving informative talks and has undertaken the manufacture of low-cost sanitary pads so that many more girls and women have access to products that allow them to live their menstrual period with dignity and peace of mind.

Communication is very necessary, especially in a society where menstruation is a taboo or forbidden subject, and where mothers do not talk to their daughters, husbands do not talk to their wives, and friends do not talk to each other. Many women do not know what sanitary pads are and have never heard of them. Many others do not think they can buy them by themselves for fear of being judged or criticized, or simply do not have the resources to buy them.

This small community group that wants to bring change, instructs women in the process of making sanitary towels. Of course, many of these women are not comfortable accepting this fact, and this work, and would rather tell the men in their family that they are making diapers for children, than face the truth that they are making sanitary napkins. Some of them also hide the fact that they are working, in order to avoid all kinds of annoying questions. In a society where patriarchy is so entrenched, it takes time to talk about women's issues, it takes time for even women themselves.

Through this documentary, you can also see that when there is a will, there are no limits. These women work against all odds and face all kinds of problems, the most common of which is a lack of electricity, since there is no set schedule for blackouts. Sometimes, when there is electricity at night, they open the small place where they keep their machine, to prepare the necessary material and to reach their daily goal, even when it is not safe to work at these hours.

When the sanitary pads are ready, these women go to different places nearby to explain how their product works and mention the benefits to the local women. These sanitary pads are designed for the socio-economic context in which these women and girls find themselves. For example, the pads are more absorbent, which makes women's lives easier, avoiding the need to change them so often, which means less money is spent. In addition, its creators are clear that when another woman, and not a man, is the one who offers the product, girls and women feel much more comfortable when buying it.

The big impact of a small act

The important thing here is that this small initiative has transformed the lives of a small group of women who, in turn, are transforming the lives of other women. This work has become a space of development, empowerment and independence for these incredible beings. A sense of community, empathy, and mutual understanding and support has been generated. When they work, they share and laugh a lot. In addition, this has allowed many of them to gain the respect of their husbands, children and parents.

This community has understood that women are the foundation of any society. They are powerful, in many ways, even if they sometimes do not give credit to themselves. Some do not know how much power they have and all they can do with it. But it is clear, the world cannot move forward without women.

La historia

Cuando se les pregunta a las niñas si saben qué es la menstruación, a algunas les da risa. Pero no es una risa de burla, es una risa tímida, incómoda, que no entiende la razón de la pregunta y que solo busca dar por terminado el tema inmediatamente. Muchas otras, afirman que en efecto sí saben que es, pero que se abstienen de responder porque les da vergüenza la pregunta. Sin embargo, no solo son las niñas quienes tienen esta actitud frente al tema.

La misma pregunta se les hace a jóvenes adultos, ellos, riendo también, casi en shock por oír una pregunta de este tipo responden que tienen entendido que la menstruación es como una enfermedad que afecta solo a las mujeres. Cuando se les pregunta a las ancianas, ellas aseguran que la menstruación es algo que solo dios sabe lo que es, pero que hace referencia a una sangre mala.

Y así, en general, se considera la menstruación como un problema de niñas.

De acuerdo con esto, lo primero que se puede concluir es que hay mucha desinformación sobre lo que realmente es la menstruación. Este desconocimiento sobre lo que es un proceso biológico, normal y natural, trae consigo muchos problemas para las mujeres y niñas que lo enfrentan cada mes.

Las implicaciones de la desinformación sobre este tema

La implicación más notoria: discriminación en cada esfera de la vida de las mujeres y de las niñas.

Las niñas ven interrumpida su educación pues tienen problemas para asistir al colegio y en muchos casos deciden retirarse. Como se muestra en el documental, las niñas mencionan las dificultades que tienen al cambiarse la tela que usan para evitar manchar. Cuentan que deben ir a lugares alejados para hacerlo y que, en muchos casos, la presencia de los hombres las hace sentir incomodas, pues muchas veces se les quedan viendo, lo que evita que ellas se puedan cambiar. Esto ocurre cuando ir a un baño o a un lugar privado no es una opción para ellas en ese momento.

En lo referente a la religión, las mujeres no visitan los templos ni rezan a ningún dios mientras tienen su periodo. Primero, porque los ancianos les han asegurado que sus rezos no son escuchados por los dioses y, segundo, porque se consideran sucias.

Este problema de desinformación sobre el periodo menstrual también genera problemas para la salud de las niñas y las mujeres. Muchas de ellas utilizan telas viejas y no se las cambian constantemente, lo que puede resultar en incomodidad y hasta en infecciones. Como lo aseguran en este filme, las niñas, simplemente, al ver que están sangrando usan cualquier tela que encuentran.

Hora de actuar

Para combatir esta falta de información y generar un cambio en la comunidad sobre la concepción esta concepción errónea de la menstruación, un pequeño grupo de mujeres decide mejorar la comunicación dando charlas informativas, y ha emprendido la fabricación de toallas higiénicas a bajo costo para que muchas más niñas y mujeres tengan acceso a productos que les permitan vivir su periodo menstrual con dignidad y tranquilidad.

La comunicación es muy necesaria, especialmente, en la sociedad en la que la menstruación es un tabú, o tema prohibido, y en la cual las madres no hablan con sus hijas, los esposos no hablan con sus esposas y las amigas no hablan entre ellas. Muchas mujeres no saben que son las toallas higiénicas y nunca han escuchado sobre este producto. Muchas otras, no se creen capaces de ir a comprarlo por si mismas por miedo a ser juzgadas o criticadas o, simplemente, no tienen los recursos necesarios para adquirirlo.

Este pequeño grupo de la comunidad que quiere generar el cambio, instruye mujeres en el proceso de como fabricar toallas higiénicas. Claro esta, varias de estas mujeres no se sienten cómodas aceptando este hecho, y este trabajo, y prefieren decir a los hombres de su familia que están fabricando pañales para niños, que enfrentar la verdad de que están haciendo toallas higiénicas. Algunas de ellas, también esconden el hecho de que están trabajando para evitar toda clase de preguntas molestas. En una sociedad en donde el patriarcado es tan arraigado, toma tiempo hablar sobre asuntos relacionados con mujeres, les toma tiempo incluso a las mismas mujeres.

A través de este documental, también se puede ver que cuando hay voluntad, no hay limites. Y es que estas mujeres trabajan contra todo pronostico y enfrenando todo tipo de problemas, el más común: la falta de electricidad, ya que no hay horario fijo para los apagones. A veces, cuando hay electricidad en las noches, ellas abren el pequeño lugar en el que guardan su máquina, para preparar el material necesario y alcanzar su meta diaria, incluso cuando no es seguro trabajar a estas horas.

Cuando las toallas sanitarias están listas, estas mujeres van a diferentes lugares cercanos para explicar como funciona su producto y mencionan los beneficios a las mujeres locales. Estas toallas sanitarias son pensadas para el contexto socioeconómico en el que se encuentran estas mujeres y niñas. Por ejemplo, las toallas cuentan con mas absorción, lo que facilita la vida de las mujeres evitando que se tengan que cambiar tan seguido lo que representa menos dinero gastado. Además, sus creadoras tienen claro que cuando otra mujer, y no un hombre, es quien ofrece el producto, las niñas y mujeres se sienten mucho más cómodas al comprarlo.

El gran impacto de un pequeño acto

Lo importante aquí, es que esta pequeña iniciativa a transformado la vida de un pequeño grupo de mujeres que, a su vez, están transformando la vida de otras mujeres. Este trabajo se ha convertido en un espacio de desarrollo, empoderamiento e independencia para estos increíbles seres. Se ha generado un sentimiento de comunidad, empatía y entendimiento y apoyo mutuo. Cuando ellas trabajan, comparten y se ríen mucho. Además, esto les ha permitido a muchas de ellas, ganar el respeto de sus esposos, de sus hijos y de sus padres.

Esta comunidad ha entendido que las mujeres son la base de cualquier sociedad. Son poderosas, en muchos sentidos, aunque a veces no se den crédito a si mismas. Algunas no saben cuanto poder tienen y todo lo que pueden hacer con el. Pero es claro, el mundo no puede avanzar sin las mujeres.
